What is Smart Batteries
Common lithium battery
With a normal lithium polymer battery, we can test the current charging status and operating voltage of the battery, but that’s the extent of our information unless we have an external host device that can monitor and measure the battery.
Intelligent/Smart battery
However, a smart battery is a battery that contains a battery management system (BMS). It is commonly used in devices that require real-time battery status tracking, including mobile devices and uAVs/uAVs /eVTOL. The smart battery has internal electronic circuits and sensors that detect important data such as voltage, current levels and health status and then transmit them to an external display for clear viewing and understanding by the user.

For example, it will instruct the user to charge the device when the battery detects a low charge, abnormal temperature, notify the user to take action when the battery life is running out, and so on.
Characteristics of smart batteries
In general, batteries, smart chargers and host devices communicate with each other to maximize product safety, efficiency and performance. For example, smart batteries need to be charged when needed, rather than placed on the host system to achieve consistent energy consumption.
Tracking battery capacity
Smart batteries keep track of their capacity whether they are charged, discharged or stored. A battery coulometer uses certain factors to detect changes in battery temperature, charge rate, discharge rate, and so on. Smart batteries tend to be adaptive and self-balancing. Fully charged storage impairs battery performance. The smart battery can start the smart storage function as required and discharge to the storage voltage to ensure battery safety.

Changing charging Mode
Smart batteries can also extend their service life by modifying their charging algorithms to respond to changing environmental conditions. We all know that the battery may be affected in an overly cold or overheated environment, and the smart battery will reduce the current to reduce the possibility of damage when overheated, when the temperature is low, its internal heat will reduce the automatic generation, so that the battery operating temperature restored to the normal level.

Recording battery history, including cycles, usage patterns and maintenance requirements, is also a function of smart batteries, and these advantages make them a choice for more and more modern devices.
