A new way to prevent short circuits

Lithium battery has the risk of internal short circuit due to the material system and manufacturing technology. Although lithium batteries have undergone strict aging and self-discharge selection, due to unpredictable application factors such as process failure, there is still a certain failure probability during the application process, resulting in internal short circuits. As for the battery pack, there are hundreds or even tens of thousands of lithium batteries, which greatly increases the possibility of battery pack rupture. Due to the explosion of high-power group energy, internal short circuits are likely to induce vicious accidents, causing casualties and property losses.

TE’s PPTC and MHP-TA products provide a possible solution to prevent a vicious accident in the event of a short circuit in the power supply battery. As for the parallel lithium-ion power lithium battery module, when one or more batteries are suddenly discharged in a short time, the battery battery module will discharge, and the energy of the battery will cause the temperature inside the short battery to rise rapidly, which can easily lead to thermal runaway. Eventually cause the battery to rupture. See Figure 1.

The traditional temperature detection can tell the IC to cut off the main circuit when the battery heats up, but it cannot prevent the continuous discharge inside the parallel battery module. In addition, because the main circuit is blocked, all the energy of the battery module is concentrated on the internally short-circuited battery, which increases the probability of thermal runaway. The ideal solution is to block the connection circuit between the battery and other batteries in the module if the battery is found to be hot in a short period of time.

 

As shown in Figure 2, TEPPTC or MHP-TA series products are assembled on a single economizer unit. When an internal short circuit occurs, the TE maintenance equipment effectively blocks the connection between the internal short-circuit battery and other batteries in the module to avoid serious accidents. For power lithium battery packs with a large number of single-cell batteries, the internal resistance of the battery and the equipment are required to be consistent during the assembly process. However, due to its internal bimetallic structure, MHP-TA has good device resistance consistency and can meet the requirements of battery internal resistance to a large extent.
